Personal Development Judgement in the EYFS

I recently spoke at the Early Years Inspection and Improvement Conference on the Personal Development judgement in the EYFS.

In my talk I looked at Ofsted’s expectations around this judgement area and discussed the ways in which you can successfully demonstrate how you can promote Personal Development within your provision.

Personal Development and the Curriculum

Ofsted will be looking at how the curriculum provides opportunities for personal development and independence.  The ways in which you give children a rich set of experiences to promote all round development will be monitored.

In making a judgement about Personal Development inspectors will look to evaluate the intent and quality of your provision.  They will look at children’s personal and emotional development including whether they feel safe and are secure and happy.  How you use the curriculum to support and build young children’s resilience and confidence will be a focus.

Key Person System

Having a robust key person system is central to good personal development.  Modelling what good choices are around food, rest, exercise and screen time is another important aspect of this judgement.

Emotional Literacy

Teaching the language of feelings to develop emotional literacy and encouraging children to recognise and talk about different emotions needs to be promoted to ensure good health and well-being is in place.

Celebrating each unique child

Celebrating each unique child and having a positive working ethos within your provision will also help to support personal development.

British Values

Practice supporting the principles of equality, diversity and British Values should be firmly embedded in an age appropriate way.
