Transition from the EYFS to Year One
The end of the school year is always a busy time. EYFS teachers everywhere will be completing their EYFS Profile Judgements and working out who has reached the Good Level of Development. As well as all this is it now also time to think about the transition from the EYFS to Year One.
Why is Transition important?
Children entering Year One will arrive from Reception with a wealth of skills and abilities. They have been fully immersed in the EYFS curriculum for a year and will have had plenty of opportunities for active, hands on, sensory learning.
Building Upon Learning Experiences
In order to ensure a smooth transition from Reception to Year One it is important that learning experiences in Year One build upon the practical approaches from Reception.
Children in Reception have enjoyed a creative approach to their learning.
Well-Being
It is very important for children’s well-being that the learning environments and resources are set up in a similar way to how they were in Reception. This will help to ensure a smooth transition takes place and that the children feel secure and happy in their new learning environments and opportunities.
Working Together
Strong links between the Year One Team and the EYFS team are vital. Discussions about the children’s needs, likes and interests should take place.
Planning
It is important that the EYFS Profile Data is used to inform planning and learning themes. Consideration needs to be given to the Early Learning Goals and any areas which have not been achieved within these.
Parental Partnerships
Parents should be kept informed of transition procedures and settling in processes. Strong parental relationships should be continued to be fostered as they were in the EYFS.
Positive transition times
Ensuring that this time of transition is a positive and happy one will make a big difference to both the children and teaching staff. This should be seen as an exciting time for the children as they enter the next stage in their learning journey.
